Carlos Ríos is a member of the editorial council of Bazar Americano, director of the editorial project Oficina Perambulante, and coordinator of writing and editing workshops in prisons of Buenos Aires province. Trunks
On the screens a future history is written in which the people, affected by an unprecedented pandemic, transport themselves from one place to another in the luggage compartments of cars. The circulation in the trunks throughout the grid of the city and its surroundings regulates the exchange between survivors. This is the only modality the monkeys, since they took total control of the fight against the global spread of Covid-19, authorized for the human beings trapped in an indefinite quarantine.
Protection
Two Cambodian scientists suggest the state should teach the monkeys social work in the Covid-19 era. They could start by cleaning the trunks of the cars with bleach and dedicate themselves to manufacturing face masks. The subsequent step would be to enroll them in an accelerated driving and road safety course. They would take charge of distributing food and medicine, as well as waste collection. No one imagines that the monkeys will govern the world after the pandemic.
Restinga
The sanitization of trunks in the prisons and the new taxes are imposed by the state without delay. Those who offer the transportation service avoid the big avenues and the frontage roads. There is room for unlawfulness and human trafficking. In the Restinga da Marambaia—where the body of the Finance Minister was found, after breaking the quarantine to jog by the shore of the Atlantic Ocean—alternative roads are opened which expand, as a collateral effect, the action radius of the pandemic.
Collapse
Decimated by the coronavirus and thanks to a bylaw composed by a select committee of hominoid primates, the health personnel of Ecuador has been sent to their homes, without seeing their total earned income affected. After the eleventh month of compulsory confinement, the mandrills and the Carajá people take care of the infected patients. At the foot of the Machín Monkey, concluding two weeks of intensive work, they manage to attenuate the collapse of the health system and the domiciliary deaths represent only 0.04 per cent of the economically active population.
Protest
Dozens of neighbors take to their balconies in Berlin to condemn the entry of those health professionals that live in the same buildings. They will bring the coronavirus to our homes, they argue. It would be better if in their place the state hired monkeys of the Juanhaúnha variety, famous for their ability to imitate human conduct, to carry out the sanitary work without risk of contagion.
Femicides
An undesired effect of the confinement is that dozens of men murder their partners. The previous state did little or nothing to revert this situation, but the authorities of Pandape have taken the matter into their own hands. In Argentina, the statistics of women that passed away of Covid-19 are lower than the amount that died in the hands of femicides. The culprits are executed immediately in the central plazas; the apes shoot, impale, decapitate, burn, break, drown, and sometimes, for efficiency, they conduct all these actions simultaneously.
Inquiry
Some governmental decisions are left to the discretion of the International Committee of Chimpanzees, whose immediate action was to travel to Wuhan to meet with pangolins and bats in the wet market. They want to hear each testimony in person—the monkeys discarded the virtual conferences after judging them untrustworthy—before developing a report of the situation that will allow them to put an end to the pandemic that affects human beings. They discard the paranoid hypotheses that put China at the center of the hurricane.
Burials
Gangs of monkeys freed from the Central Park Zoo bury more than one thousand bodies per day on Hart Island. Other monkeys, in the meantime, transport the corpses from Time Square and the Amazon in trucks that were confiscated from the big meat processing plants with headquarters in Naples. They pile the cardboard boxes in a communal grave until the arrival of the mandrills that drive the power shovels. They push and smooth the land until there is no trace left of the executed work.
Surfaces
On the balconies of the buildings artistic demonstrations and protests take place that consist of making pots and pans echo. Initially the human beings applaud the actions of the monkeys that officiate the sanitation practices in the worst trenches: Lombardy, Wuhan, Madrid, New York, São Paulo, Guayaquil, Buenos Aires. Everything resembles a science fiction novel that was written in another century and no one has read. Monkeys trained in Mexico by the painter Francisco Toledo devote themselves to the task of feeding the stories with illustrations which occur at the speed the virus disseminates across the surfaces and enters, like in a ball game, the body of each individual.
Economy
The multimillionaire families of Pandape flatly refuse to donate a negligible part of their fortunes to fight Covid-19. We have lost millions of dollars to the collapse of the airport transport system, they argue. Thousands of employees are fired from their companies. There are infected workers that cut their legs on the sawmills. Others flee to the reeducation camps that the primates built to enclose the offenders. Rumors spread that there is more food there than on the streets.
Cajuelas
En las pantallas se escribe una historia futura donde las personas, afectadas por una pandemia sin precedentes, se trasladan de un lado a otro en baúles de automóviles. La circulación dentro de las cajuelas por la cuadrícula de la ciudad y sus alrededores regula el intercambio de los sobrevivientes. Esta es la única modalidad que los monos, desde que tomaron el control total de la lucha contra la diseminación del Covid-19 por el planeta, autorizaron a los seres humanos atrapados en una cuarentena indefinida.
Protección
Dos científicos camboyanos sugieren que el Estado debería enseñarles a los monos el trabajo social en tiempos del Covid-19. Podrían empezar por limpiar con lavandina las cajuelas de los automóviles y dedicarse a la fabricación de cubrebocas. El paso posterior sería impartirles un curso intensivo de manejo y seguridad vial. Se harían cargo del reparto de alimentos y medicinas, también de la recolección de la basura. Nadie imagina que los monos gobernarán el mundo tras la pandemia.
Restinga
La sanitización de las cajuelas en las cárceles y la imposición de nuevos gravámenes por parte del Estado no se hacen espera. Quienes ofrecen el servicio de traslados esquivan las grandes avenidas y los accesos a las autopistas. Hay margen para la ilegalidad y el contrabando de personas. En la restinga de Marambaia –donde apareció el cuerpo del Ministro de Hacienda, tras romper la cuarentena para salir a correr a orillas del Océano Atlántico– se abren caminos alternativos que amplían, como un efecto colateral, el radio de acción de la pandemia.
Colapso
Diezmado por el coronavirus y gracias a una ordenanza redactada por un selecto comité de primates hominoides, el personal sanitario de Ecuador ha sido enviado a sus hogares, sin que se vea afectada la percepción total de sus salarios. A partir del undécimo mes de confinamiento obligatorio, mandriles y carajás se encargan de los pacientes infectados. Al pie del Mono Machín, tras dos semanas de trabajo intensivo, lograron atenuar el colapso en el sistema de salud y las muertes domiciliarias representan apenas el 0,04 por ciento de la población económicamente activa.
Protesta
Decenas de vecinos salen a los balcones en Berlín para repudiar el ingreso de aquellos profesionales de la salud que viven en los mismos edificios. Ellos traerán el coronavirus a nuestras casas, argumentan. Sería mejor si el Estado contratara en su lugar a monos del tipo juanhaúnha, famosos por su capacidad de imitación de las conductas humanas, para que lleven a cabo el trabajo sanitario sin peligro de contagiarse.
Femicidios
Un efecto no deseado del confinamiento es que decenas de hombres asesinan a sus parejas. El Estado anterior hizo poco o nada para revertir esta situación, pero las autoridades de Pandémono han tomado cartas en el asunto. En Argentina, las estadísticas de las mujeres fallecidas por Covid-19 ceden ante los números de las que murieron en manos de los femicidas. Los culpables son ajusticiados de inmediato en las plazas centrales; los simios fusilan, empalan, decapitan, queman, quiebran, ahogan y a veces, por razones de agenda, realizan todas las acciones en simultáneo.
Investigación
Algunas decisiones de gobierno han sido dejadas en manos del Comité Internacional de Chimpancés, cuya acción inmediata fue viajar a Wuhan para reunirse en el mercado de animales con pangolines y murciélagos. Quieren escuchar cada testimonio de modo presencial –los monos han descartado las conferencias virtuales por considerarlas poco confiables– antes de elaborar un informe de la situación que les permita poner fin a la pandemia que afecta a los seres humanos. Descartan las hipótesis paranoicas que ponen a China en el centro del huracán.
Entierros
Cuadrillas de monos liberados del Central Park Zoo entierran en Hart Island más de mil cuerpos por día. Otros monos, en tanto, trasladan los cadáveres desde Time Square y el Amazonas en camiones que fueron confiscados a los grandes frigoríficos con sede en Nápoles. Apilan las cajas de cartón en una fosa común hasta que llegan los mandriles que manejan las palas mecánicas. Empujan la tierra y la alisan hasta que no queda rastro alguno del trabajo ejecutado.
Superficies
En los balcones de los edificios tienen lugar manifestaciones artísticas y protestas haciendo resonar ollas y panelas. Al principio los seres humanos aplauden el accionar de los monos que ofician las prácticas sanitarias en las peores trincheras: Lombardía, Wuhan, Madrid, Nueva York, San Pablo, Guayaquil, Buenos Aires. Todo parece una novela de ciencia ficción que ha sido escrita en otro siglo y que nadie ha leído. Monos instruidos en México por el pintor Francisco Toledo se dan a la tarea de alimentar con dibujos las historias que suceden a velocidad del virus diseminándose por las superficies y entrando, como en un juego de pelota, en el cuerpo de cada individuo.
Economía
Las familias multimillonarias de Pandémono se niegan terminantemente a donar una parte ínfima de su fortuna para la lucha contra el Covid-19. Hemos perdido millones de dólares al colapsar el sistema de transporte aeroportuario, argumentan. Miles de trabajadores son expulsados de sus empresas. Hay operarios contagiados que se cortan las piernas en los aserraderos. Otros huyen hacia los campos de reeducación que construyeron los primates para encerrar a los infractores. Se corre la voz de que allí hay más comida que en las calles.
